Get to Know Barbara Lee 's Mission
David English, as cofounder of Barbara Lee Foundation. This charity is the lasting change to which my mother contributed so much of her life. Barbara Lee Hull English, 1928-2018, loved to help others in any way she could.
My father, William Walter English, 1925-2014, also native to Los Angeles, was an aerospace design engineer and supported charities and individuals. Bill and Barbara's influence caused me to establish Barbara Lee Foundation.

Barbara Lee developed her passion for education while a child and very involved in the upbringing of her younger brother and conquering his learning disabilities. BL attended Stanford University and got degree in education. She taught 3rd grade in Los Angeles schools.
As our family grew to three children at school age she stopped working at Public Schools and focussed on our education and interests. Her time spent else where was devoted to chairities and projects devoted to a great educational experience.
Memories of mother are full of her being very busy talking on the phone and going to meetings. She participated and filled the various elected positions for the organizations like ; Parent Teacher Association, Parent Teacher Student Associations , Knowledge Enrichment for Youth ( co founder), Girl and Boy Scouts , Ebell , Reading for the Blind, Ticktocker, Alpha Phi sorority, Thrift shop , Sorry I can't recall all of them.
Barbara Lee loved art. Her mother, Neola May Meekins, was quite the artist. The appreciation for beautiful creations was part of our world. My mother specialized in needlecraft and stitchery. She co founded and administrated some specialty guilds and associations, locally and at the national level. Her work lives on! Being a creator and a producer pleased her greatly.
Barbara Lee's passion for bringing opportunities to learn to the less advantaged never wained. When my parents had too many care needs for myself and my sister to cover we hired help. This was new and different for us all. Together we realized there were some individuals that just excelled at care and companionship, while others seemed tired and uninterested in the bigger picture. The big picture is called Love of Life. This is what we want to nurture. This is where difficulty and crisis turn into change and opportunity. I found ways to attract and hire the best of our helpers. Nurses with a passion for life. Care providers that loved the challenge of learning something new, like cooking. Keeping the energy fresh and constantly loving made rewarding times for us all. Barbara Lee Foundation hopes to change lives educating and enabling those who wish to go forward.
