Understanding How Trauma Affects Our Bodies

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by so many emotions that you felt like your body couldn't contain them, and you desperately wanted to run away, but there was nowhere to go?

I understand. I used to feel incredibly unhappy in my body, overwhelmed by a flood of emotions. As a child, I was conditioned to believe it was too much to feel these emotions. My mom couldn't cope with her own feelings due to her trauma, and I learned to be responsible for others' emotions.
Recently, I had a call that made me realize I am still holding myself back from things I truly want because I believe I can control others by what I do or don't do. Even though I thought I was aware of this, there are still feelings that arise from my body before my mind can catch up.
A great book on this topic is The Body Keeps the Score. While it’s full of fascinating information, I couldn’t finish it because it triggered certain things for me. My body would react—I would clench my fists or grind my teeth at night, holding so much anxiety and unresolved trauma. This wasn't just my trauma but also ancestral trauma, which I am still in the process of releasing.
The Science Behind Trauma StorageScientifically, our bodies store trauma in various ways. Chronic muscle tension, jaw clenching, and teeth grinding (bruxism) are common symptoms. This happens because the body's stress response activates the sympathetic nervous system, leading to a fight-or-flight state. Over time, if the trauma is not processed and released, these physical symptoms persist as the body remains in a state of hypervigilance.
Research has shown that trauma can alter the brain's structure and function, particularly areas involved in memory and emotion regulation, such as the hippocampus and amygdala. This can lead to a heightened stress response and difficulty in calming down, even when the immediate threat is no longer present.
Gabor Maté on Trauma and HealingRenowned physician Gabor Maté has extensively discussed the impact of trauma on our health. He explains that unresolved trauma can lead to chronic illnesses, mental health issues, and a general sense of disconnection from ourselves and others. Maté emphasizes that healing trauma is not just about addressing the symptoms but understanding the root cause and working through it compassionately. He encourages practices such as mindfulness, therapy, and bodywork to help release stored trauma.

Symptoms of Trauma Stored in the BodyRecognizing the signs of stored trauma in your body is crucial. Some common symptoms include:
  • Chronic Muscle Tension: Persistent tightness in the muscles, especially in the shoulders, neck, and back.
  • Jaw Clenching and Teeth Grinding (Bruxism): This often occurs unconsciously, particularly during sleep.
  • Frequent Headaches: Tension headaches and migraines can be related to stored stress and trauma.
  • Digestive Issues: Problems like IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and other digestive disturbances can be linked to unresolved trauma.
  • Fatigue and Insomnia: Chronic tiredness and difficulty sleeping can be a sign that your body is constantly in a state of alert.
  • Hypervigilance and Anxiety: Feeling constantly on edge or anxious is a common manifestation of trauma.
  • Emotional Numbness or Frequent Emotional Outbursts: Difficulty regulating emotions can be a direct result of trauma stored in the body.
The Price of Not Releasing TraumaThe consequences of not releasing trauma from our bodies are significant. It keeps us in a perpetual state of survival, unable to fully experience the present moment. This can affect our relationships, work, and overall quality of life.

Maté's work emphasizes that our bodies are not just passive recipients of trauma but active participants in its manifestation and release. He believes that healing involves reconnecting with our bodies and understanding the ways in which trauma has been stored. Practices like yoga, meditation, and somatic experiencing can help individuals become more aware of their bodies and the trauma stored within them.

Steps to Release Trauma from the Body

1. Therapy and CounselingEngaging with a therapist who specializes in trauma can provide a safe space to explore and process traumatic experiences. Therapies such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) are particularly effective.
2. Mindfulness and MeditationMindfulness practices help increase awareness of the present moment, allowing individuals to notice and process their bodily sensations and emotions without judgment.
3. Yoga and Somatic PracticesYoga and somatic experiencing are powerful tools for releasing trauma stored in the body. These practices emphasize the mind-body connection and help individuals release physical tension.
4. Physical ActivityRegular exercise, such as walking, running, or dancing, can help release built-up tension and improve overall well-being.
5. JournalingWriting about your experiences can be a therapeutic way to process emotions and understand the impact of trauma on your body.

Conclusion
Releasing trauma from our bodies is essential for leading a healthy, fulfilling life. It's a journey that requires patience, compassion, and the willingness to confront and process deep-seated emotions. If you suspect that you might have stored trauma, consider seeking help from a therapist or exploring modalities that focus on body awareness and release. The journey of healing is deeply personal, but it is also profoundly liberating.
Remember, you are not alone in this. There is hope, and there are ways to heal and reconnect with your true self. By acknowledging and addressing trauma, we open the door to healing and a more fulfilling life.

    ANASTAZJA GAJKOWSKA

As a young girl, I dreamt of exploring the world and shining like a sunflower. But as I set out on my travels, my heart led me astray, and I fell into abusive relationships with strangers I trusted too easily. I thought that by changing locations, I could escape the cycle, but no matter where I went, I found myself in the same place, with the same doubts and insecurities. It was then that I realized there was something inside me that needed to change. The constant self-doubt was holding me back from achieving my dreams and living a fulfilling life. I knew I needed to start trusting my body and feelings instead of avoiding them and numbing myself to the pain. Through self-discovery, I learned to recognize that every feeling holds a deeper truth about myself, and by exploring these feelings with curiosity and compassion, I developed intuition and gained a deeper understanding of myself. It wasn’t easy, but I found the courage to pursue my dreams and let go of the self-doubt that had held me back for so long. I found joy and happiness that I never knew existed and started living life to the fullest. I want this for everyone – to let go of their doubts and fears and pursue their dreams with unwavering confidence. Don’t let the past define you or hold you back. You have the power to create a bright and beautiful future. Believe in yourself and your dreams. You are capable of achieving greatness and making a positive impact on the world. The power lies within you.
